This Saturday, April 17, is Independent Record Store Day worldwide. That
confirms it: there now is an official "holiday" for anything and everything.
Seriously -- what a great idea --celebrate the few remaining independent
(as if there are any other kind left) record stores! Let's go one step further
and celebrate independent Jazz record labels (again, as if there were any
other kind left)!
Here we have the Bob Szajner (arranger/ composer/ pianist) trio paying
tribute to (among others) influences: Bill Evans, Hampton Hawes, and McCoy
Tyner. And they mix it up with different styles and forms: quasi-modal, latin
jazz, gospel, waltz... The music moves with abounding energy. It's not slick.
It's not flashy. It is engaging and captivating. Not surprisingly, there were
thousands of festival-goers in the audience that day. The photo on the tray
card confirms this. I did get out a magnifying glass to make sure I wasn't
mistaking trees as people. When was the last time you attended a Jazz show
that had an audience of more than a handful? Celebrate the live music of
yesterday today!
